JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball team defeated the University of Auburn at Montgomery on Monday afternoon, 5-3. AUM swept Union on Sunday evening, 13-1 (5) and 4-2. Union is now 13-11 on the season and 4-5 in the Gulf South Conference. AUM is now 22-5 overall and 7-5 in conference play.
Peyton Mathis hit a two run RBI to start game three of the series in the fourth inning. Taylor Manley hit a RBI single to score Mathis, to put Union up 3-0. Kristen Pickens singled to center field to score Harley Bartholomew. Manley scored the Lady Bulldog's last run of the game to pull ahead 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Auburn Montgomery's Kendall Tuck hit a three run homerun to fight back into the game. Gabby Morris was able to get out of the inning, Union won 5-3.
Manley and Pickens recorded two hits each for Union, Mathis recorded two RBI.
Morris (6-5) tossed a complete game, giving up three runs on three hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
In game one of the series, the Warhawks scored four runs in the first inning. A two-run homerun from AUM put them ahead 6-0 heading into the third inning. AUM scored their seventh run in the top of the third. Kaitlyn Kelley hit an RBI single for Union in the bottom of the third, recording the only run for the Lady Bulldogs of the game. AUM scored six more runs in the top of the fifth to win the ball game, 13-1.
Ashten Petty, Kelley, Haley Barnette, and Davis each had a hit for the Lady Bulldogs. Kelley recorded Union's only RBI.
Parker Davis (3-6) took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs after tossing 4.1 innings giving up nine runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Manley pitched in relief giving up four runs on two hits. Ashley Graves finished the game for the Lady Bulldogs pitching .2 inning giving up one hit, with one strikeout.
Both teams remained scoreless in the second game until Auburn Montgomery scored three runs in the top of the third. Kelley and Barnette both hit a homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring the score within one. The Warhawks scored a fourth run in the top of the fifth, Union was unable to score another run.
Barnette recorded two hits for Union, Kelley and Smith each had a hit.
Morris (5-5) took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs after pitching a complete seven innings, giving up four runs off of five hits with three strikeouts and six walks.
Up next for Union is University of Illinois Springfield on Thursday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m.
