JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team won both games on Saturday afternoon against Maryville University. The Bulldogs won the first game 7-4 in nine innings, and the second game 4-3 in nine innings.
Union got on the board in the second when Caleb DeMarigny's single to center field drove in Spencer Shultz. Drew Hill added another run after an error by the Saints. DeMarigny also added another run for Union in the third after Charlie Ellis was hit by a pitch. Maryville scored their run in the fifth. In the sixth, Hayden Lewis scored a run off a single from Hill. Hill added another run off a Dacoda Stone single to right field. Union's last run of the game was scored by Hill off a single from DeMarigny. The Saints scored two runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth to make the final score 7-4.
Logan Portis took the win for Union, tossing six innings, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Scott Shearer tossed for two innings, allowing four hits with one strikeout and zero walks. Brandon Maxwell tossed one inning allowing two hits with one strikeout and one walk.
In the second game, Josh Frantz scored off a sacrifice fly to right field by DeMarigny in the second inning. In the fifth inning, Maryville scored three runs. In the ninth inning, the Bulldogs tied the game up when Shultz and Tyler Thomas scored off of a single down the middle by Stone. Nolen Milton sent a fly ball deep to center that scored DeMarigny easily from third. Union won 4-3.
Ryan Mets tossed five innings, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Spencer Woods took the win, tossing four innings allowing one hit with two strikeouts and zero walks.
Up next for the Bulldogs is a home series against Bellarmine University starting on Friday, February 15th at 2:00 p.m.
