Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Union University softball team earned a split in day one at the Charger Chillout hosted by The University of Alabama in Huntsville. Union opened play with an 8-3 win over Ohio Dominican University, then fell in the second game 13-5 at the hands of Georgia College.
Union is now 3-3 on the young season.
In the win over Ohio Dominican (0-1), Union scored first with a run in the second when
Abbie Page singled to score Sara Smith. Union exploded for five runs in the fifth.
Kaitlyn Kelley started the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a 2-RBI triple from
Haley Barnette and a 2-RBI double from
Ashten Petty. ODU answered with two in the bottom of the fifth, but Union got those two runs back in the top of the seventh. Barnette's groundout gave her a third RBI of the game, followed by Kelley scoring on an error to set Union's lead at 8-2. ODU scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was all Union, 8-3.
Parker Davis (1-1) earned the win, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts adn two walks.
Taylor Manley pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks. Union outhit ODU 15-8 in the game with eight players getting at least one hit. Petty led with three hits, while five players had two hits. Barnette's three RBI led the way, while Petty drove in two.
In the loss to Georgia College (3-2), Union scored first in the top of the first when Kelley's single drove in
Harley Bartholomew. Union then gave up nine runs over the first three innings. Union got three in the third on a
Sydney Christian 3-run home run. Ward's RBI single in the sixth capped the scoring for Union. GC's run in the fifth and three in the sixth was enough to end the game 13-5. Ward led Union with three hits, while Christian's three RBI was tops on the team.
Gabby Morris took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work. Davis and Manley also pitched in the game.
Union will play two more games, Saturday, Feb. 9 in the Charger Chillout versus West Liberty University and NCAA D2 No. 12 University of Illinois-Springfield.
