Bulldogs fall to Chargers in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Union University men's basketball lost 74-53 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville Friday afternoon. Union dropped to 9-4 on the season and 3-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville improved to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the GSC. 

Union's Tyree Boykin opened the game with a 3-pointer. That 3-0 lead was the only lead for Union as UAH answered with a 3-pointer to start a 9-0 run. Cooper Meadows for Union stopped the 9-0 run with a 3-pointer. Union trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half, before entering the locker room with a 40-23 deficit. 

In the second half, Union got as close as 14 points several times. Union trailed by as many as 22 points. 

After 10 straight games in the series with UAH that were decided by 10 points or less, the last four have all been decided by double figures. The last two have been decided by 20-plus with Union winning at home last season 99-75 and this year falling by 21 at UAH. 

Union was led by freshman Cooper Meadows with 12 points. Tyree Boykin and Samory Gueye each added 10 points. Gueye also led the team in rebounds with eight. Union shot 34 percent (18-53) from the field, 30 percent from long range (9-30), and 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line.

Alabama Huntsville was led by Sam Orf with 24 points. JJ Kaplan and Max Shulman added 11 points each. The Chargers shot 45 percent from the field, 36 percent (14-38) from 3-point range, and 67 percent (2-3) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be a road conference game against Lee University, January 4, at 3:00 p.m.
