Union men fall in OT at Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball lost 76-72 in overtime at Lee University Saturday afternoon. Union dropped to 9-5 on the season and 3-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee improved to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the GSC. 

The first half featured eight lead changes with the Bulldogs leading by as many as five points and the Flames leading by as many as eight points. Terrandus Smith made three free throws in the final 1:03 minutes the give the Bulldogs a 33-31 lead heading into halftime. 

Despite Union leading by as many as six points in the second half, Lee held a four-point lead with 35 seconds left in the game. A jump shot and a pair of free throws by Tyree Boykin set the score at 66-66 and forced overtime. 

Union scored first in overtime with a pair of free throws by Payton Stovall. After trading points the score was tied at 72-72 with 1:51 left to play. The Flames then scored four points to set the final score 76-72. 

Union was led by LiDonta Hicks-Gentry with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Boykin and Smith each added 13 points. Cooper Meadows added eight points. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 25 percent from long range (5-20), and 81 percent (17-21) from the free throw line.

Lee was led by Ryan Montgomery with 30 points and 12 rebounds. The Flames shot 44 percent from the field, 46 percent (11-24) from 3-point range, and 69 percent (11-16) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union is a home conference game against Auburn Montgomery, January 9, at 7:30 p.m. Union defeated AUM 87-75 on December 16.
