Before Union 
Smith lead the NJCAA Region 2 Champions in scoring as a freshman during his time at ASU Mid-South. Smith prepped at South Side HS where he was named to the 14-AA All-District team, All-Academic team and Tennessee Prep Hoops 7AA All-Region team. In addition, he was selected as Jackson South Side's Male Athlete of the Year after also earning All-District honors on the baseball field. Following the season, Smith was selected to play in the prestigious Basketball Coaches Association of Tennessee East-West All-Star Game as one of the top seniors in the state, as well as playing in the West Tennessee All-Star Game held in the summer. As a sophomore, Smith was a member of the 2014 State Championship team at South Side.
