Union men post 87-75 win at Auburn Montgomery

MONTGOMERY Ala. - The Union University men's basketball team posted an 87-75 win at the University of Auburn at Montgomery Monday evening. Union improved to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Auburn Montgomery dropped to 6-6 on the season and 1-2 in league play. 

Following a 3-pointer from Terrandus Smith, Union led 15-9 six minutes into the game. AUM responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead. AUM continued to extend the lead, going up by as many as 10 points, 29-19, at the 7:35 mark of the first half. Union chipped away at the deficit over the final seven minutes of the half. Union outscored the Warhawks 17-4 to close out the half, capped by 3-pointers from Cooper Meadows and Tyree Boykin. Boykin's 3-pointer in the final seconds of the half put Union up 36-33 at the break. 

Union's offense stayed hot in the second half as the Bulldogs kept the momentum going. Union maintained the lead for the rest of the way and following a Payton Stovall 3-pointer at the 15:33 mark, Union led by double figures for the first time, 48-37. Union continued to extend the lead. Samory Gueye's layup put Union's lead at 20 points, 74-54 with 5:52 left. Union's largest lead of the game came 79-56 at the 5:11 mark following a dunk from Smith. AUM cut into the deficit in the final minutes, setting the final at at 87-75. The Warhawks outscored Union 19-8 over the final five minutes. 

Five Union players scored in double figures led by Boykin with 18 points. Smith added 17 points, Cooper Meadows scored 14 points, Tylandrius Parks added 12 points, and LiDonta Hicks-Gentry finished with 10 points. Hicks-Gentry finished with a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds. Union shot 49 percent from the field, 37 percent (10-27) from 3-point range, and 77 percent (13-17) from the free throw line. Union had the rebounding edge, 40-33. 

Auburn Montgomery was led by Darrion Taylor with 21 points. Maharrith Jackson scored 15 and Jeremiah Bozeman added 10 points. The Warhawks shot 39 percent from the field, 38 percent (6-16) from long range, and 84 percent (21-25) from the free throw line. 

Up next for Union will be the final game before Christmas break, a road GSC game at Alabama Huntsville, Friday, December 20 at 4 p.m.
