JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 68-48 win over Christian Brothers University Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 4-5 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
Union scored 48 points in the first half, giving up just 48 points total in the game.
Terrandus Smith opened the game with a 3-pointer as Union ran out to a 14-4 lead by the first media timeout. Union cooled off for a while, but a 3-pointer from
Tylandrius Parks pushed Union's lead to 19-6 at the 11:56 media timeout. Union got hot again as the lead kept growing with Smith's third 3-pointer of the game, pushing the lead to 20 points, 32-12, with 7:48 left in the half. Stovall extended the Union lead to 37-12 with his second 3-pointer of the half. Union held its largest lead of the half at the break, 48-17, as
Tyree Boykin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, his third of the half.
Boykin led Union with 14 first half points, while Smith added 13.
Christian Brothers opened the second half with a 10-0 run.
LiDonta Hicks-Gentry stopped the run with a layup and Union's first points of the half at the 15:33 mark. Union scored just two points in the first eight minutes of the half. However, the Bulldogs kept the lead above 20 points, hitting three 3-pointers and scoring 11 points total points over the next three minutes to push the lead back to 61-35 with 8:51 left to play. With 3:49 left to play,
Cooper Meadows became the seventh Union player to hit a 3-pointer in the game, giving Union a 68-43 lead. After 48 first half points, Union scored 20 in the second half but cruised to the 68-48 final. The 20 point final was the closest CBU got in the second half.
Union was led by Boykin with 20 points. Hicks-Gentry added 16 points and Smith finished with 13 points. Eight players scored for Union. The Bulldogs shot 46 percent from the field, 38 percent (13-34) from 3-point range, and 83 percent (5-6) from the free throw line. Union out-rebounded CBU 43-25.
Christian Brothers was led by Brad Miller with 16 points and Joshua Johnson with 14 points. The Bucs shot 31 percent from the field, 24 percent (6-25) from long range, and 80 percent (4-5) from the free throw line.
