Union men top Cumberland 75-60 in final non-conference action

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 75-60 win over Cumberland University Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 8-3 on the season, while Cumberland stands at 9-4 overall. 

Union opened the game with two quick baskets to lead 4-0. Cumberland responded with seven straight points to take the lead. Union regained the lead at 21-18 following a 3-pointer from JC Hawkins. Union led for the rest of the way. Union's largest lead of the first half was 34-24 following a 3-pointer from Donavon Henry with 3:42 left to play. Cumberland closed the halftime deficit down to just five points, 37-32. 

Union quickly pushed the lead back to double figures with a 9-0 to start the second half. Four different players scored in the run. Union pushed the lead up to 16 points before Cumberland made one last run to get to within five points, 56-51, with 8:48 left. Union then put the game way with a 17-2 run to take its largest lead of the night, 73-53, with 3:38 left to play. Union led again by 20 at 75-55. Cumberland closed out with five straight to set the final at 75-60.

All nine players scored for Union with seven different players hitting at least one 3-pointers. Union was led by Terrandus Smith with 19 points. Samory Gueye added 11 points and Cooper Meadows scored 10 points. Union shot 43 percent from the field, 32 percent (12-37) from long range, and 71 percent (5-7) from the free throw line. 

Union committed just four turnovers in the game, including only one in the second half. 

Cumberland was led by Demari Davis with 19 points while Jalen Duke scored 15 points. The Phoenix shot 40 percent from the field, 35 percent (8-23) from 3-point range, and 71 percent (10-14) from the free throw line.
