JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University Bulldogs topped Williams Baptist University 88-72 Monday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium in the 2019-20 home opener. Union improved to 3-2 on the season, while Williams Baptist is 1-2 overall.
Union's 21 made three-pointers are tied for the second-most in a game in program history, missing the record of 23 made by just two. The 48 attempts are the third-most in a game, just four shy of the record.
Union came out hot, hitting five 3-pointers in the first four minutes of play to lead 15-6.
Tylandrius Parks opened the game with a three, then
Tyree Boykin hit four in a row. Union extended its lead to as many as 20 in the first half, 34-14, with 9:43 left.
Williams Baptist then took advantage of Union cooling off from the field, cutting the Bulldog lead down to 38-28 with 4:50 left. Union went back up by 18 before taking a 48-34 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Union pushed its lead out to as many as 24 points twice. The final time was following another 3-pointer from Parks, putting the Bulldogs up 61-37 with 16:50 left in the game. But again, Union went cold and Williams Baptist started to heat up. The Eagles went on a 17-0 to cut the deficit down to just seven points, 61-54, with 12:29 left to play.
Union stopped the Williams Baptist run with 12-0 run to go back up by 19 points. Union maintained a healthy lead the rest of the way, pushing out to a 22 point lead with just under two minutes to play. Union closed out the game with an 88-72 victory.
Union was led by Boykin with 27 points on 7-of-14 shooting from 3-point range. Parks finished with 20 points with five 3-pointers.
Cooper Meadows got his season-high with 11 points.
Payton Stovall dished out a career-high 10 assists.
LiDonta Hicks-Gentry led with nine rebounds. All nine players for Union scored in the game. Union shot 47 percent from the field, 44 percent (21-48) from 3-point range, and 33 percent (3-9) from the charity stripe.
Williams Baptist had five players in double figures, led by Aaron King with 15 points. Malcolm Taylor added 13 points, Travon Cobb and Shakeel Butters scored 12 each, and Shamond Garrett scored 10. The Eagles shot 52 percent from the field, 35 percent (7-20) form long-range, and 64 percent (7-11) from the free-throw line.
Up next for Union will be the GSC opener, Saturday, November 23 at 4 p.m. versus West Florida at Union.
