JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball lost 64-53 against West Florida on Saturday. The matchup was the first Gulf South Conference game for both teams this season. Union dropped to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play. West Florida improved to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the GSC.
Union got as close as five points midway through the second half, but UWF pulled back up by 13 points late in the game. A pair of 3-pointers from
Cooper Meadows pulled Union to within seven points, 56-49, with 5:25 left. UWF again extended its lead to 13 points two minutes later. A pair of free throws by
Terrandus Smith with one minute remaining set the score 64-53 as UWF took the win.
Union trailed 25-19 at the half. Union scored first, but UWF took the lead for good with a 3-pointer at 12:47 in the first half.
Union was led by Meadows with 16 points.
Tyree Boykin and Smith each added 10 points.
Tylandrius Parks added 13 rebounds. Union shot 35 percent from the field, 24 percent (8-34) from long range, and 70 percent (7-10) from the free throw line.
West Florida was led by Brown with 17 points. Sofield added 16 points and Flanagan scored 13 points. Brown added 12 rebounds. The Argonauts shot 46 percent from the field and 40 percent (12-30) from long range. They did not have any free throws.
