JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team went 2-0 in the first day of the Union Volleyball Classic Friday, September 7.
Union defeated Lane College 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-12) and LeMoyne Owen College 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-11) in the last match of the evening.
In the first match Union dominated Lane in just three sets. Union scored the first 10 points of the first set against Lane. A service error from Union provided Lane with their first point. Lane went on a five-point run later in the set, but was unable to catch up to Union.
The first few points of the second set went back and forth until Union went on a 5-0 run. Union continued to pull away until finishing the set, 25-12.
Lane scored the first two points of the third set. Lane battled for points, but the Lady Bulldogs eventually took control of the last set scoring the last six points of the match.
Union was led by Rebecca Sexton with 23 assists, Delaney Peterson with 11 kills, and Abbie Rahn with six aces and 12 digs.
In Union's first set against LeMoyne Owen College, the Lady Magicians scored first and continued to swap points with Union until a five-point run by the Lady Bulldogs set the score at 10-4. Union pulled away, eventually winning 25-15.
LeMoyne Owen jumped up 4-1 on the Lady Bulldogs at the beginning of the second set. The Lady Magicians were able to battle back and forth for points with Union until a six-point run put the Lady Bulldogs up 16-9. The Lady Magicians score three straight, but Union answered with five straight to go up 23-12. Union won 25-14.
The Lady Magicians scored the first point of the third set, but never took the lead again. Union charged out in front to win handily, 25-11.
Union was led by Megan Delaney with 11 kills, Haley Ramsey with 13 digs, and Kristen Bukowsky with five blocks. Delaney and Courtney Ondrus led with two aces each.
Up next for Union is the final day of the Union Volleyball Classic against Belmont Abbey College at 3 p.m. and Henderson State University at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 8.
