PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated the University of West Florida 81-62 Saturday afternoon. Union, ranked No. 2 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 1 by the D2SIDA Media poll, improved to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play. West Florida dropped to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Lady Bulldogs scored the first four points of the game, but the Argonauts responded with a 10-0 run. Union slowly chipped away at the UWF lead. With just over a minute left, Union's Jada Smith sank a jumper to give Union the lead again, 21-20. Union led 23-10 at the end of one.
In the second quarter, West Florida tied Union tied Union at 26-26 and again at 28-28, but never regained the lead. Union's Jada Perkins made a three-pointer to start an 11-0 run that put the Lady Bulldogs in control. The score at the end of the first half was 43-33, Union.
Union extended its lead to 14 points a few times in the third quarter, while UWF got as close as seven points early in the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Morgan Martin started a 9-0 for Union to give the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead of 20 points with 5:18 left to play. The final score was 81-62.
Union scored 56 of their points in the paint, and the bench chipped in 18 points. The Lady Bulldogs forced 16 turnovers and had 34 rebounds. The Argonauts forced 12 turnovers and had 34 rebounds.
The Lady Bulldogs had three players in double digits. Jada Smith led with 24 points and six assists. Martin led in rebounds with 11 while adding 17 points. Perkins added 15 points in the win. The Lady Bulldogs were 54 percent from the field, 17 percent (3-17) from three-point range, and 92 percent (12-13) from the foul line.
West Florida had four players in the double digits led by Toni Brewer with 17 points and Halee Nieman with 13 points. The Argonauts were 37 percent from the field, 31 percent (6-19) from long range, and 75 percent (12-16) from the foul line.
Next up for Union is a road game, Thursday, December 6th at 5:30 p.m. at Lane College in Jackson. The next home game for the Lady Bulldogs will be Saturday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m. for another matchup against Lane College.
