JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated Rust College 83-51. Union, ranked No. 4 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 2 by the D2SIDA Media poll, improved to 4-0 on the season. Rust College dropped to 5-1.
The Lady Bulldogs opened up the game on a 14-4 run and ended the first quarter up 19-12. Tiffany Rechis started the 18-3 run with a three-pointer for Union in the second quarter that put the Lady Bulldogs ahead by 23 points. At the end of the first half, Union was up 44-19. The Lady Bulldogs added to the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Rust 24-9. Union's largest lead of 43 points came with 8:35 left in the game. Rust outscored Union 23-15 in the fourth quarter to set the final at 83-51.
Union scored 30 of their points in the paint, and the Union bench pitched in 29 points. The Lady Bulldogs forced 16 turnovers and had 46 rebounds. Rust forced 11 turnovers and had 39 rebounds.
Union had four players in the double digits led by Tiffany Rechis with 16 points, Morgan Martin with 14 points and 12 rebounds, Jada Smith with 12 points and seven assists, and Deja Graves with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Perkins led in assists with eight and in steals with four. Lady Bulldogs were 41 percent from the field, 35 percent (11-31) from long range, and 75 percent (12-16) from the foul line.
Rust was led by Keimeshia Walker with 17 points and Lisa Crawford with 10 points. Rust was 30 percent from the field, 36 percent (8-22) from long range, and 62 percent (5-8) from the foul line.
