Union completes sweep in opening GSC series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROME, Ga. – The Union University baseball team completed the sweep of their opening Gulf South Conference series with two wins in a Sunday double header at Shorter University.

Game One
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union opened the scoring in the top of the first inning pushing across one run on a double play. The Bulldogs doubled their lead in the third with a solo shot from Tyler Mauzy to make their lead 2-0. 
  • Shorter got on the board in the fourth scoring a single run on a baserunning play.
  • Union broke the game open pushing across five runs in the top of the fifth. Nolen Milton drove in two runs on a RBI single to centerfield scoring David Robbins and Austin Orr. Zach Phillips then belted a three run homer to right field to make the Union lead 7-1.
  • Shorter scratched two runs across in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Bulldogs put up three more in the sixth with a solo homer from Orr and a two RBI double from Zach Wylie making the score 10-3.
  • Union scored their final run of the ball game in the eighth when Hayden Lewis walked forcing home Milton from third. Shorter would score two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but would fall short giving Union the 11-5 win.

POSTGAME STATS
  • Teddy Christie started on the mound for Union earning his 3rd win of the season going 7.0 innings giving up three runs on six hits while striking out four batters. Copper Bullough and Austin Kitterman split the remaining two innings of work in relief to seal the win.
  • Austin Orr led Union at the plate going 3-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored. Tyler Mauzy also contributed at the plate with a home run and double of his own, while Zach Phillips drove home three runs while recording three hits of his own.


Game Two
WHAT HAPPENED
  • It was Shorter who jumper on the board first in the second game of the twin bill scoring two runs in the first and another in the second inning to get a 3-0 lead.
  • Union pushed their first runs across in the top of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly out from Tyler Mauzy scoring Ryne Roper from third. Nolen Milton then drove in two runs in the on a single to the right side scoring David Robins and Austin Orr. The Bulldogs took the lead two batters later on an RBI ground out from Dylan Moore allowing Milton to cross the plate and give Union the 4-3 lead. 
  • The Bulldogs continued their scoring in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Mauzy that scored Orr. The Bulldogs pushed another run across on a double play three batters later and Moore, Zach Phillips, and Ryne Roper then came through with RBI hits giving Union the the 9-3 lead. 
  • Shorter scored two more runs in the fifth inning, but Union scored another in the seventh when Roper reached on an error allowing Hayden Lewis to score and set the final at 10-5.

POSTGAME STATS
  • Marty Coursey started on the mound for Union and earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season going four innings giving up four runs on six hits. Austin Kitterman came into the game in relief tossing two innings giving up just one run in his second appearance of the day. Ryne Roper then finished the game throwing the final inning for the Bulldogs.
  • Hayden Lewis was the only Union player with multiple hits in the game going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. 
  • It was the first game in the last four contests for Union that the Bulldogs have not had a home run.

UP NEXT
The Bulldogs finish up their road stretch on Tuesday with a single game at Harding University. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
