Union baseball opens GSC action with 14-4 win over Shorter

Box Score ROME, Georgia. – The Union University baseball team opened Gulf South Conference action with a 14-4 win over Shorter on Saturday afternoon. Every Union batter in the lineup scored in the contest with four batters with home runs.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union was the first on the board scoring in the top of the first inning with a two run homer from Nolen Milton, his fifth of the season, that score Tyler Mauzy. Milton homered twice in the previous game for the Bulldogs including a grand slam in his last at bat of the game.
  • The Bulldogs added two more runs in the bottom of the second with Ryne Roper scoring on an error by the catcher, and Austin Orr driving a man home on an RBI single to right field. 
  • Dylan Moore added another two runs to the Union total in the third with a two run shot to left to push the Union lead to 6-0.
  • Union pushed across another two runs in the fourth, one on a fielders choice from Mauzy who then scored on a passed ball later in the inning.
  • The Hawks finally got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth with a two run homer, making the score 8-2. Shorter pushed across two more runs in the bottom of fifth on an error and an RBI double.
  • The Bulldogs scored again in the top fifth with a solo shot to left from Roper who was followed up by a homer from Zach Wylie to lead off the seventh. Union plated four more runs in the seventh with RBI doubles from Roper and David Robbins as well as a RBI single from Mauzy to set the final at 14-4. 

 
POSTGAME STATS
  • JR Miller earned his third win of the season after starting the game with six innings pitched giving up three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Austin Kitterman closed out the game striking out the side to seal the victory for Union.
  • Ryne Roper led Union at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored with a home run and a double in the game. David Robbins and Austin Orr both recorded three hits in the game.

Union will finish the three game set with the Hawks on Sunday afternoon with a double header slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
