LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University Lady Bulldog softball team split with the University of West Alabama Tigers in a double-header Friday, March 25. Union dropped the first game 9-1, but rallied back to win the second game 8-0. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 8-29 on the season and 3-17 in Gulf South Conference play. The Tigers dropped to 4-16 in league play and 12-20 on the season.
In the 9-1 loss in the first game, Union was led by
Emily Bennett going 2-for-three at the plate. Bennett got an RBI triple to score
Whitney Christian to get the lone run for Union. UWA's Ashley Stassin got the win on the mound going all five innings, allowing one run on five hits.
The Lady Bulldog bats were on fire during the second game of the night. Union jumped on the board in the top of the second inning, scoring all eight runs.
Madison Tennyson walked to lead off the inning, and would eventually come around to score after an error by the shortstop on
Rachel Ridolfi's single. The Lady Bulldogs would score again when
Summer Cross singled to score
Marley Dyess who reached on a fielder's choice.
With runners on first and second, Bennett drilled a ball down the left field line to clear the bases and get the two RBI triple. Up next,
Reagan Schrader hit an opposite field triple to trade places with Bennett, and would come around to score after a
Haley Barnette single in the next at-bat. In her second at-bat in the inning,
Madison Tennyson got Union's third triple of the game scoring Barnette. Tennyson would then steal home to cap off the second inning for the Lady Bulldogs.
Hailey Cummings stunned the Tigers batters, allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters in her five innings of work.
The Lady Bulldogs will battle West Alabama in the rubber game Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.
