JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University baseball team fell in a slugfest with Arkansas Monticello 26-18 in which the two teams combined for 44 runs and 38 hits.
Arkansas Monticello exploded in the top of the first inning after loading the bases on three walks that was followed up by a single to drive home two runs. UAM added two more runs on a double and a single to give them the early 4-0 lead.
Union was quick to answer when the leadoff hitter, 
Zach Phillips belted a ball to left field that cleared the fence for solo homerun. The Bulldogs got the next two men on base with walks that were driven home on an RBI single from 
Zach Wylie to cut the Monticello lead to one, 4-3.
The Boll Weevils added a run in the top of the second scoring a run on an error by the Union defense that would have ended the inning. Union tied the game in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs with 
Austin Orr scoring on a wild pitch and Phillips coming home on a groundout.
Monticello kept up their scoring in the third and fourth innings scoring two runs on an RBI single in the fourth and two more in the fourth on a long homer from Corey Wood to deep right field and would add three more runs in the inning to take the 12-5 lead. 
Union got one run in the bottom of the fourth when an infield fly ball fell between three fielders and allowed Orr to come in to score in one of the more interesting plays of the afternoon.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit by four more runs in the fifth with a an RBI single from 
Jesse Kelley followed by Zach Phillip's second homer of the day that drove in three runs to make the score 12-10.
UAM moved their lead to three runs in the top of the sixth scoring an unearned run on an error on a throw from the catcher that got by the third basemen.
Union took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with three RBI singles from 
Brady Cook, 
Alex Jones, and Orr that each plated a run and another run scored when 
Charlie Ellis reached base on an error to give the Bulldogs the 15-13 lead. Union added three more in the seventh including a solo homer to dead center to put the score at 18-13.
The Boll Weevils were not done as they put up a run on with a two run homer from Corey Wood. UAM added seven more runs in the inning on just four more hits with Union having to four pitchers facing 15 Monticello batters. UAM added four more runs in the top of the ninth including and RBI double and triple coming back-to-back that put UAM up 26-18.
A combined 39 players played in the game and 30 walks or hit batters reached base for both teams. 
Zach Phillips led the Bulldogs at the plate going 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored. 
Austin Orr also had a day at the plate going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. 
Caleb DeMarigny was entered as a pinch hitter yet still managed to go 3-for-3 with two runs.
 Skyler Harrison started on the mound for union going 3.1 innings and was relieved by 
Andrew Wilson who went 4.1 innings before running into trouble in the eighth inning.

 Union returns to GSC play on Saturday when they host Valdosta State in a double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
