JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University baseball team opened their season with two shutout wins over Ouachita Baptist on Saturday afternoon with scores of 5-0 and 6-0.
The Bulldogs got things going in the bottom of the third scoring an unearned run on an infield hit. In the next inning
Brady Cook rolled a ball to second base for a fielder's choice that scored
Zach Wylie to put Union up 2-0 after four innings.
Union closed the door with runs late in the game. Wylie singled to center to score
Zach Phillips in the sixth,
Dylan Moore had another RBI single to score
Matthew Duncan in the seventh, and Wylie homered deep to right field in the eighth to seal the final score at 5-0.
Junior college transfer
Tommy Weiler (1-0) earned the win the first game of the afternoon tossing six scoreless innings while only allowing three men to reach safely for the Tigers.
Marty Coursey came into the game in relief to throw the final three frames giving up only one hit and recording 4 strikeouts.
In the second game of the double header, the Bulldogs Union scored first with an RBI Single from
Tyler Mauzy scoring
Mason Castile in the third inning. Union put two more runs on the board in the fourth with Moore belting a line drive into the right field corner to score
Ryne Roper. Two batters later Wylie continued his hot hitting ripping a groundball through the legs of the third basemen pushing Moore in to score from second.
Union added three more runs in the bottom half of the sixth with Wylie,
Jesse Kelley and Castile each contributing on RBI singles to set the final at 6-0 in favor of Union.
Teddy Christie (1-0) started on the mound for Union in the second game going a solid six scoreless innings stranding six Tigers on base and striking out four hitters.
Joe Hudson saw his first action on the season coming in for the final three outs of the game.
Zach Wylie led the Bulldogs at the plate going 4-for-7 in the double header with a homerun, four RBI's and three runs scored.
Dylan Moore also went 4-for-7 in his debut for Union with three RBI's and a double.
Union gets back into action tomorrow afternoon in the final game of the series against Ouachita Baptist at 1:00 p.m.
