Union baseball sweeps Ouachita Baptist to open season

JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University baseball team won their third straight game Sunday afternoon for the first time since 2013. The Bulldogs took down Ouachita Baptist 10-8 in the final game of the three game series.
Ouachita Baptist scored first in the game, getting their first run of their season when Jakhari Howell scored on a passed ball from Union in the top of the first inning.
The Bulldogs were quick to answer back in the bottom half of the frame loading the bases with a walk and two errors by the Ouachita Baptist second basemen that brought Dylan Moore to the plate. After working the count to 3-1, Moore pulled a hard grounder passed the third basemen into the left field corner and allowed all three runners to score for Union. Zach Phillips and Austin Orr then reached to load the bases once again allowing Zach Wylie to push home a run by drawing a walk to set the score at 4-1 in favor of Union.
The Tigers evened the score again at 4-4 in the top of the second on back to back at-bats when Justin Weigle and Will Wallace had RBI hits to drive home three runs.
The score would remain tied going into the bottom of the third inning when Brady Cook came to the plate and ripped a triple to deep left center that scored Orr and Nolen Milton. Union added another run in the inning when Hayden Lewis beat out an infield hit that scored Cook from third and set the score at 7-4 with the Bulldogs leading.
Union scored single runs in the fifth and sixth with Wylie scoring on a wild pitch and Moore smashing a home run deep over the left centerfield fence for his first round-tripper of the year. The Bulldogs put their final run on the board in the seventh inning when Tyler Mauzy came home on another wild pitch.
Ouachita Baptist would not go down without a fight going into the final inning down by three runs, 10-7. The Tigers pushed a run across in with two outs and then put runners on first and second but Bulldog reliever Joe Hudson closed the door striking out the final batter of the game to give Union the 10-8 win and earn his first save of the season.
Union was led by Dylan Moore at the plate who went 2-for-3 with a homerun, four RBI's and two runs after a 4-for-7 performance in Saturday's double header. Zach Wylie carried over his hot hitting from Saturday's game as well going 3-for-4 in the final game of the series with an RBI and a run scored.
