MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The Union University baseball team claimed their fourth straight victory to open the 2016 season Tuesday afternoon with a 10-0 win against LeMoyne-Owen College.
Union took an early lead in the contest scoring two runs in the opening frame. Ryne Roper reached base on a walk and was driven home on a triple from Zach Phillips. The next batter, Bailey Holbrook, singled pushing Phillips home from second for the 2-0 lead. Two innings later the Bulldogs got Austin Orr on as a result of a dropped fly ball in centerfield. Roper drove him in on a sacrifice fly to deep right field to push the Union lead to 3-0. Holbrook, the next batter for the Bulldogs, reached on a hit by pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Zach Wylie. The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth inning when Wylie scored on an RBI single from Nolen Milton. Union put two more on the board in the sixth scoring on a wild pitch and another RBI single this time courtesy of Roper. The Bulldogs put the game away in the top of the seventh scoring three runs with back to back RBI doubles from Orr and Roper followed up with a RBI single from
Zach Phillips.
The 2-3-4 hitters carried Union in the Tuesday afternoon win with Orr going 1-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI followed by Roper who went 3-for-3 with three RBI's, two runs and a double and
Zach Phillips going 2-for-3 with two RBI's and runs himself. The three Bulldogs accounted for seven of Union's 10 total runs.
Freshman
Nate Moenning earned the win in his first college start tossing a scoreless six innings allowing 5 hits and striking out two LeMoyne-Owen hitters.
Andrew Wilson finished out the game tossing the final frame only allowing one man to reach base safely.
Union hosts Maryville in a three-game weekend series starting Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. and a single game Sunday also starting at 1:00 p.m.
