JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University baseball team split a low scoring double header with Maryville University Friday afternoon to move to 5-1 on the season.The Bulldogs fell behind for the first time this year when Maryville got things going in the second inning when Yoonjae Nam led the inning off with a double and was driven home on another double from Zach Ruckman. A few pitches later Ruckman scored on a single from Connor Markell.
Union put one on the board in the bottom half of the after loading the bases with two walks and an error.
Zach Wylie hit a chopper to the third basemen who tagged third and then threw it over the first basemen's head.
Dylan Moore scored on the play to put the score at 2-1 with Union trailing.
Union managed to push another run across in the bottom of the third.
Bailey Holbrook led off the inning with a walk when
Austin Orr followed him up with a single that drove Holbrook across to score and tie the game at 2-2.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the fifth when
Zach Phillips came to the plate with two outs and
Dylan Moore and
Ryne Roper on second and third. After working the count to 3-2, Phillips fouled off four straight pitches before hitting a ball to the deep right-center corner that scored both runners and gave the Bulldogs the 4-2 lead which would hold as the final.
Marty Coursey started on the mound for the Bulldogs and earned his first win of the season pitching seven innings giving up only two runs on four hits and struck out four batters.
Joe Hudson came in for his second save of the season tossing the final two innings allowing only one hit.
The second game of the afternoon double header was strictly a pitching matchup. With their first real scoring chance of a scoreless game coming in the bottom of the eight inning Union found themselves with
Bailey Holbrook at third base after a hit and a stolen base and
Ryne Roper at second after being intentionally walked with only one out.
Zach Phillips grounded a ball hard to the third basemen and Maryville caught Holbrook in a run down for the second out of the inning. Phillips and Roper were able to move up to second and third during the rundown giving Union another chance for a walkoff win with two outs, but the next hitter grounded out to second to end the scoring threat.
In the next half inning Maryville found themselves with a chance to take the lead in the scoreless ballgame after Sean Murphy lifted a ball to left center field that fell between the two Union outfielders and allowed him to get all the way to third on the play with just one out. The next batter, Dalton Schumer, was able to hit a deep fly ball to left field that allowed Murphy to score the only run of the game. Union was able to get a single from
Charlie Ellis in the bottom of the ninth but could not score to lose their first game of the season in extra innings.
Skyler Harrison started on the mound for Union tossing six scoreless innings allowing only four hits.
Andrew Wilson came into the game in relied going three innings giving up the only run in the game for the tough luck loss.
Hayden Lewis was the only Bulldog to get multiple hits going 2-for-4 with two singles. Union was shut down at the plate striking out 14 times in the extra inning game while only managing six hits.
Union finishes out their series with Maryville on Saturday with a single game starting at 1:00 p.m.
