Union gets come from behind win 8-6

JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University baseball team improved to 6-1 on the season with a 8-6 win Saturday afternoon against Maryville University.
Maryville took the early lead in the ballgame after getting their first batter aboard on a hit by pitch and scored on a two out single by Garrett Taylor. Taylor was then able to score on the following at bat after an error by the Union shortstop for the 2-0 lead. Maryville added another run to their lead in the top of the sixth when Mitch Carriger scored on a passed ball after reaching base on a walk to start the inning.
Union finally got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth. Bailey Holbrook reached first after being hit by a pitch and then advanced to third on a single from Austin Orr. Ryne Roper came to the plate next for the Bulldogs and roped a double down the left field line scoring Holbrook. Orr scored on a wild pitch in the next at bat cutting the Maryville lead to one, 3-2. Zach Phillips was the next batter to the plate and lifted a ball to center field that allowed Roper to score from third to tie the game. 
The Bulldog offense opened up in the bottom of the seventh with Zach Wylie opening the inning with a single to start things off. He was followed up by Nolen Milton who drew a walk and both runners advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from Jesse Kelley. Brady Cook then rolled a ground ball through the drawn in Maryville infield that allowed both runners to score and give Union the 5-3 lead. Holbook followed up the RBI single from Cook with a single of his own and Orr reached safely on a hit by pitch to load the bases. Roper came to the plate hitting a long fly ball for another sacrifice fly that scored and Cook and Orr came in on an error by the Maryville third basemen to give Union the 8-3 lead.
Maryville would not give up scoring three runs in the top of the ninth inning cutting Union's lead to only two but the Bulldogs held on to win their sixth game of the season.
Matthew Pickard started on the mound for Union tossing five innings only giving up one earned run and recording five strikeouts. Nate Moenning came into the game in relief to earn the win with two innings of work giving up only one run and one and Joe Hudson tossed the final two innings of the game giving up three unearned runs on only three hits.
Brady Cook led Union on the offensive side of the ball going 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI and a run scored. Ryne Roper also had two RBI in the game while both Austin Orr and Brady Holbrook scored two runs a piece.
Union takes the road in their next matchup with a single game at Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. The Bulldogs open conference play next weekend hosting Shorter with a double header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday with games starting at 1:00 p.m. on both days.
