Union baseball drops road game at Arkansas Monticello 5-4

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Union University baseball team fell Wednesday afternoon 5-4 at the University of Arkansas Monticello. Union dropped to 6-2 on the season while Arkansas Monticello improved to 4-4.
 
Of Union's two losses on the season, both have come by one run (1-0 loss to Maryville).
 
Union scored first as Ryne Roper drove in Tyler Mauzy on a groung out. However, UAM answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take control 4-1. The big hit coming on a 2-RBI single from Steinke.
 
Union answered quickly in the top of the second to tie the game with three runs. Mauzy drove in Zach Wylie for the first run. Roper then extended his season long hitting streak to eight games with a 2-RBI single to center field.
 
In the bottom of the second, Arkansas Monticello jumped back on top for good to lead 5-4 on an RBI single from Ray.
 
Neither team scored for the remainder of the nine-inning game.
 
Union out hit UAM 7-6. Union committed two errors in the game, allowing one run to score unearned.
 
Roper, who has hit safely in all eight games this year, led Union with two hits and three RBI. Zach Phillips also had two hits. Nate Moenning started but lasted just one-third of an inning, allowing four earned runs. Andrew Wilson (0-2) took the loss in relief allowing on run in his 2.2 innings of work. Four other pitchers including Teddy Christie, Skyler Harrison, Marty Coursey and Charlie Ellis tossed the final five innings of scoreless relief.
 
Up next for Union will be their Gulf South Conference opener with a weekend series at home versus Shorter.
