JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University baseball team split their first double header of Gulf South Conference play against Shorter Saturday afternoon winning 7-1 in the first game and dropping the second game 7-5 in extra innings. Union's record moves to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.Union struck first in the contest with an RBI Double from

The Bulldogs were held to a single run until the bottom of the fourth inning when
Austin Orr laid down a squeeze bunt in down the first base line allowing
Zach Wylie to score. The next inning saw Union doubling its lead with a RBI double from
Ryne Roper scoring Mauzy and a RBI single from Wylie scoring Roper from second to lead Shorter 4-0.
Union put three more runs on the board in the bottom half of the sixth.
Ryne Roper blooped a ball into the outfield in front of the centerfielder pushing Orr to move to third. The Shorter defense then threw the ball passed the third basemen allowing Orr to come in for Union fifth run of the ballgame. Two batters later
Zach Phillips had an RBI single scoring Roper and Mauzy giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.
Shorter avoided the shutout in the seventh scoring a fielders choice, but could not make the comeback falling by the score of 7-1.
Marty Coursey started on the mound for Union tossing 7.0 innings giving up only one run on five hits striking out six batters to earn the win.
Andrew Wilson came into the game for the final 2.0 innings of work giving up only two groundball hits in his fourth appearance of the year.
Dylan Moore led Union at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and RBI.
Ryne Roper kept his hot hitting on track going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while
Tyler Mauzy went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
In the second game of the afternoon's double header, Union was the first to get on the board again, this time in the bottom of the third with
Hayden Lewis leading the inning off with a double. With two outs and two on,
Zach Phillips rolled a ball to third which was then thrown away allowing Union's first run to score.
Zach Wylie took advantage of the error and ripped a double into the right field gap pushing both
Dylan Moore and Phillips home for the 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs added another run to their total when
Nolen Milton singled pushing Wylie home for the 4-0 lead.Â
Shorter answered the Union offensive outburst in the next half inning with three straight extra base hits, a walk, and a single all coming in a row that led to four runs tying the game at 4-4.
Union pushed another run across in the bottom of the fourth after Lewis scored on a sacrifice fly from
Tyler Mauzy after leading the inning off with a triple. Shorter was quick to answer again scoring on an RBI single from Dustin Lawson.
After a scoreless two frames, Shorter came through in extra innings. The first batter of the eighth singled off of a line drive that hit
Joe Hudson, the Union pitcher. After loading the bases on two walks, Shorter had the bases loaded and pushed across the go ahead run and an insurance run with back to back walks to take the 7-5 lead. Union was able to get one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth but could not score to lose their first conference game of the season.
Teddy Christie started for Union going 7.0 innings giving up five runs on six hits but struck out nine.
Joe Hudson earned the loss tossing an inning giving up two runs.
Nolen Milton helped Union at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the third inning.
Hayden Lewis also had two hits in the contest with a double and triple scoring both times he reached base.Â
Union finishes out the three game series with Shorter on Sunday with the rubber game starting at 1:00 pm.
