MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University Lady Bulldog softball team split with the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs (5-14, 2-6 GSC) took the first game 9-4, while CBU (5-13, 1-7 GSC) won the second game 1-0.
In the first game, Union took the lead with a homerun coming from
Rachel Ridolfi in the third inning to score
Emily Bennett and
Whitney Christian who both reached on singles earlier in the inning. The Lady Bulldogs scored again in the top of the sixth inning with a grand slam from
Summer Cross. Bennett,
Samantha Ortiz, and
LaDesha Nelson all scored on the homer.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Christian brothers surged with five runs.
Hailey Cummings came in to relieve starting pitcher
Paige Taylor with two outs, and was able to get the ground ball out to end the CBU threat. Union capped off the game with a two-run homerun off the bat of
Whitney Christian, setting the final score at 9-5.
Paige Taylor got the win Union going 5.2 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, with two strikeouts.
Hailey Cummings got the save going 1.1 innings allowing just one hit with one strikeout. Offensively, the Lady Bulldogs were led by
Whitney Christian going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Summer Cross added four RBIs going 1-for-5, and
Rachel Ridolfi added three RBIs going 1-for3 at the plate.
The second game was set to be a pitcher's duel between Union's Cummings and CBU's Jenna Cotter. Christian Brothers scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hannah Oliver singled to score Cotter who reached on a single to right center earlier in the inning.
Jenna Cotter got the win in the circle going seven innings, giving up three hits, and striking out six Union batters.
Hailey Cummings got the tough-luck loss going six innings, and giving up one run on six hits.
Emily Bennett,
Rachel Ridolfi, and
Haley Barnette had hit each for the Lady Bulldogs.
Union will conclude the GSC matchup Sunday at 12pm at Christian Brothers.
