McKENZIE, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team fell 7-6 at Bethel University Monday afternoon. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-23 on the season.
Union started strong with two in the first inning and two more in the top of the fifth to lead 4-0. A two-out double by
Brady Cook capped the 2-run first inning. A second hit of the game by Jackson native
Austin Orr followed by a double from
Jim Martin set up the scoring as Union took advantage of a Bethel throwing error.
Bethel rallied back to take the lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The two teams then swapped runs in the eight and ninth inning. Union tied the game in the top of the eighth, while Bethel pulled back ahead with a run in the bottom of the inning. The same happened in the ninth with Bethel's Sanchez hitting a walk-off homer to right field in the bottom of the frame to win the game. Union's final two RBI of the game came on a single from
Trae Bain, scoring Tyler Mathis, and a third hit from Orr, scoring
Shane Wilder.
Orr and Martin led Union with three hits each. Bain added two hits with all five RBI coming from five different Bulldogs.
Preston Thompson started for Union, allowing five runs with nine strikeouts in six innings of work.
Andrew Wilson tossed on inning of relief, allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout.
Trae Bain tossed the final 1.2 innings allowing two runs, one earned on two hits with a strikeout. Bain dropped to 1-2 on the season.
Up next for Union will be an added game to the schedule, Wednesday, March 25 at 6 p.m. versus University of Tennessee Martin at Fesmire Field.
