Before Union
Mathis prepped at Donelson Christian Academy where he played baseball, football, basketball and ran cross country. He helped his team a semifinal appearance in the state tournament in 2010, four appearances in the sectional tournament, including the title in 2010. Mathis was named all-region twice, all-tournament and was selected for the Adidas Middle Tennessee Senior All-Star Classic. He was also selected as team captain for both the baseball and football teams. Mathis earned other awards outside of baseball, including all-region in football, the NFL Retired Players Association’s Inspiration Award, the Wilburn Dugger Memorial Award (highest athletic honor at DCA), the Mike Brown Male Christian Athlete of the Year and Walter Nipper Sportsmanship Award. Off the field, Mathis earned National Latin Exam summa cum laude, Distinguished scholar three times, Principal’s List four years, Boys State, Mid-State SATB Choir, All-State TTBB Choir, National Honor Society Vice President, Mu Alpha Theta President and was an FCA officer. He is the son of Jeff and Renee Mathis.
