Union men pull away late against Lee, 81-61

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team stayed perfect on the season with a 81-61 win over Lee University. Union remained atop the Gulf South Conference standings 2-0 league record and an 8-0 record overall. Lee dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
 
Union fell behind 7-0 to start the game, but got things going to even the score at 11-11 with 14:51 left in the half. The first haft was close the rest of the way with neither team getting a lead larger than six points. The first half included three ties and eight lead changes. Union trailed by one late in the half. After a late Lee turnover, Union made good on one final shot when Brennon Bowling hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Union a 38-36 lead at the break.
 
Lee cut the Union lead to just one point, 40-39, one minute into the second half, but never caught the Bulldogs. Union pushed their lead to double figures with 11:19 left. Union wen up by 18 points, 67-49, with 8:16 left. Lee rallied back to get as close as eight point, 69-61, with 3:51 left. But Union responded and with a 3-pointer in the final minute from Jordan Montgomery, Union's lead was 20, the largest of the game.
 
Marterrace Brock led four Union players in double figures with 19 points. Roy Bullock added 13 points with three 3-pointers. Ashanti Day recorded his second straight double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Serigne added 11 points and nine rebounds. Union shot 43 percent from the field, 41 percent (9-22) from long range and 83 percent (20-24).
 
Lee was led by CJ Reese and Rico Overall with 13 points each . Keevin Tyus added 12 points. The Flames shot 42 percent from the field, 15 percent (2-13) from 3-point range and 78 percent (7-9) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be the first of four straight road games, Thursday, December 10 at Mississippi College at 8 p.m.
