CLINTON, Miss. – The No. 24 Union University men's basketball team earned a 61-54 road win at Mississippi College Thursday night. Union stayed perfect at 9-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Mississippi College stormed out of the gates early with an 11-0 lead after the first three and one half minutes of play. Union finally got their first basket of the game at the 16:14 mark from
Marterrace Brock. Union began to creep back into the game and with 2:28 left in the half, took their first lead of the night 25-24 on a jumper from
Felipe Rocha. The lead was short-lived as the Bulldogs went into halftime down 29-26.
Union opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take again at 33-29. Union kept the lead for the rest of the night. Mississippi College stayed close, never letting Union push their lead to double figures. But the Choctaws could not catch the Bulldogs. Union led by as many as nine points late in the game, 61-52, their largest of the night.
Union was led by Brock with 18 points on the night.
Ashanti Day scored 13 points, while
KC Goodwin added 11 points and a team high four assists. Day and
Jordan Montgomery led Union with nine rebounds each. Union shot 43 percent from the field, 24 percent (4-17) from long range and 73 percent (19-26) from the free throw line.
Mississippi College was led by Johnny Rucker with 11 points, while Tristan Moore and Jonathan McGee added 10 points each. Tory Rice led with a game high 11 rebounds. The Choctaws shot 28 percent from the field, 32 percent (6-19) from 3-point range and 80 percent (16-20) from the free throw line.
