Union upsets #5 Drury to remain perfect

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri.- The Union University men's basketball team stayed perfect on the season with a 75-54 win over #5 Drury University to improve to 6-0. Marterrace Brock was named tournament MVP and earned All-Tournament Honors with teammate Ashanti Day.

After a big second half in their win Friday against Truman State, the Bulldogs carried the momentum into their matchup with #5 Drury early in the first half earning a quick 5-2 lead following a three from Jordan Montgomery. Roy Bullock hit another three and Brock put two more on the board with a layup to push the Union lead to 10-4 six minutes into the game. Drury kept the game close over the next few minute of play finding themselves down 16-11 before Union went on yet another run of nine straight points including two three-pointers from Brennan Bowling. The Bulldogs kept that pace for the remainder of the half to lead 32-25.

The Panthers came out looking more like themselves after the break cutting the Union lead to only one point, 44-43, after their own nine point run with 12:30 remaining in the game. Following two free throws from Day, the Bulldogs got back on their pace from the first half scoring 10 straight points with two more threes from Montgomery and Brock to lead 54-43 with 10 minutes to play.

Union ran away with the game in those last ten minutes outscoring Drury 21-11 to set the final at 75-54. The Bulldogs shot 43.9% from the field and went 10-27 from behind the arc while only missing one free throw going 15-16 at the line.

The Bulldogs were led by Marterrace Brock with 17 points while Jordan Montgomery had 16. Ashanti Day had 15 points and led both teams with 9 rebounds.

Brock averaged 23.5 points and 5.5 rebounds which was good enough for tournament MVP while Day averaged 17.5 points and 11.5 in the two games this weekend to earn a place on the All-Tournament team.

The Bulldogs start conference play next weekend hosting Shorter on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. and Lee on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Union is the only remaining unbeaten team in the Gulf South Conference.
