MOBILE, Ala. – The Union University men's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with a 67-60 win over LeMoyne-Owen Friday at the Spring Hill Classic. This was the season opener for both teams.
Union scored the first five points of the game on a bucket from
Marterrace Brock and a 3-pointer from
KC Goodwin. However, LeMoyne-Owen responded with a 19-4 run to lead 19-9 with 14:29 left in the first half.
Union slowly began to cut into the deficit and with 5:44 left in the half, Union tied the game at 25-25 following a layup from Brock. Union pushed their lead to 34-30 with 3:02 left in the half. Neither team scored in the final three minutes of the half.
In the second half, Union extended their lead to as many as 16 points, 52-36 with 12:29 left in the game. LeMoyne-Owen responded with one last run, a 12-0 spurt to cut the Union lead to just four points. But Union held on for the 67-60 win.
Union was led by Bock with 18 points.
Serigne Mboup added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while
Roy Bullock scored 12 points.
LeMoyne-Owen was led by Larry McGaughey with a game-high 22 points. Demba Konate added 10 points.
Up next for Union is a 4 p.m. game Saturday versus tournament host Spring Hill.
