Box Score 2 JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball fell twice Saturday and once Sunday to the University of West Alabama at Fesmire Field. Despite outhitting West Alabama in game one, the Tigers won 3-1. In the second game, West Alabama scored three runs in the ninth inning of a scheduled seven inning game to win 5-2. The final game Sunday was won 6-0 by West Alabama to complete the sweep. Union is now 12-27 overall and 5-17 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama is 25-11 and a 14-8 GSC mark.
Each team scrapped for hits against solid pitching in the Saturday doubleheader on Fesmire Field. The teams recorded 21 total hits in the action. Union outhit West Alabama in the first contest 5-4, while West Alabama outhit Union 7-5 in the seocnd game.
In the first game, Both pitchers tossed complete game performaces in the nine inning contest. West Alabama went on top 1-0 in the second.
Wacey Russell tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the inning with a double to right field scoring
Zach Wylie. The Tigers regained the lead 2-1 in the third. Union was primed to go in front in the fourth with one out and the bases loaded.
Jim Martin was forced out at home. A high through to first led to a colision with Russell and the Tiger first baseman, who then alertly threw home to tag out
Michael Flores for an inning ending double play. West Alabama added a run in the sixth for the 3-1 win.
Brad Royer had two hits for Union.
Taylor Bratton (3-3) got the win by tossing a complete game, his first of the season. Ted Christie (0-6) went the distance for the Bulldogs, their first complete game of the season. It was the first complete game for Union since
Jared Davis picked up a 7-3 win in seven innings May 8, 2013 over Tennessee Temple.
Game two started with a run for West Florida in the first, then another in the fifth. Union tied the game in the fifth. A pair of walks surrendered to Wylie and Flores led to Union leveling the score 2-2.
Hunter Smith drove a pitch up the middle to tie the game. The Bulldogs were unable to get timely two-out hits that may have led to a win. In the sixth Union left runners at first and second then in the eighth Royer was left at third following a two-out triple. West Alabama plated three in the ninth to pick up the victory 5-2.
Zach Parks (7-2) went eight innings to earn the decision. Tanner Rainey (6) moved to the mound from first base in the ninth for the save.
Derek Roof (2-5) came on to begin the seventh in relief of starter
Samuel Davis. Davis allowed two runs on two hits with five strikeouts in his six innings of work in the start.
The loss drops Union to 2-4 overall in extra-inning games. Union has won only one of four extra inning baseball games in GSC play.
In the series finally, West Alabama scored three unearned runs in the first inning. The Tigers added two more runs in the second to lead 5-0. A late run set the final at 6-0. Union's
Preston Thompson (1-5) was good, allowing just two earned runs in his seven innings of work. Union managed just seven hits, including three from Royer and two from
Hunter Smith.
