Union softball takes pair from Salem International

JACKSON, Tenn. – Playing in their longest home stand (11 games) of the season, the Union University softball team won both games Monday afternoon over Salem (W.Va.) International University. Union claimed game one 10-0 in five innings and game two 8-1. Union is now 11-6 overall. Salem International, who began their season Sunday, falls to 0-4.
 
In the first game, Union used the long ball early to take control. Alex Williams started Union off with a home run to centerfield. Erin Picard drew a walk then stole second. Shelby Lamb clubbed a homer over the wall in left centerfield to put Union up 3-0. Union ended their four-run inning with a single to right field by Sarah Kreuter that plated Reagan Schrader, who got on base with a walk.
 
A big third inning of five runs on six hits increased the Union lead to 9-0. Amanda Chandler launched a two run home run over the fence in left centerfield, bringing home Summer Cross, who reached on a fielder's choice. Kreuter singled and scored when Carter Mansolino pounded a home run over the wall in centerfield for an 8-0 lead. Moriah Bohlmann scored the final run in the inning. Bohlmann singled through the right side and moved to third on an error. Picard hit a single to leftfield allowing Bohlmann to race home for a 9-0 Union score.
 
A solo tally in the bottom of the fourth put the score at 10-0. Cross got aboard via an error and ran to third on the miscue. Chandler lofted a ball into right field scoring Cross.
 
Kelly Robey got the win to improve to 7-4. Kayla Lynch (0-2) took the loss.
 
In the second game, Salem International scored first in the game getting their lone run in the second inning. Kayla Guta took a walk. Angela McGoldrick laced a triple to left field to score Guta for a 1-0 Tigers lead.
 
Union responded with two in the bottom of the second to hold a 2-1 advantage. Chandler doubled into centerfield scoring Schrader who got on with a leadoff walk. Kreuter singled down the line in right field moving Chandler to third. Cheyenne Mauldin flied out to right field scoring Chandler.
 
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the third. Picard and Lamb had back-to-back singles then each moved up a base on a wild pitch. A double from Schrader scored Picard and Lamb. Schrader stole third and scored on a Mauldin single to right.
 
Union capped their scoring with a three run sixth. McKinley Tribble, pinch hitting for Bohlmann, reached on a fielder's choice.
Picard also got on with a fielder's choice that moved Tribble to second. Lamb singled to stuff the bases. Schrader hit a bases clearing double to right center giving Union the 8-1 edge.
 
Hailey Cummings (3-1) was the winning pitcher. Isabel Villalobos (0-2) got the loss.
 
Union returns to Gulf South Conference action Saturday playing the Shorter (Ga.) University (9-6, 4-1 Gulf South Conference) Hawks on Fesmire Field with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1:00 p.m.
