NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team lost 14-12 to host Trevecca Nazarene University Thursday night in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) MidEast Region Baseball Tournament. Union, seeded third in the tournament, dropped to 12-33 on the season, while No. 2 seed Trevecca improved to 33-30.
Union scored first with five runs in the top of the second inning. Union got RBI singles from
Zach Wylie,
Colton Speed, and
John Reed, while
Wacey Russell mixed in a 2-RBI triple. Trevecca added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to tie the game.
Union again exploded out to a big lead with six runs in the fifth.
Cole McAdams drove in the first two runs with a single. Later in the inning,
Pierson Waring made his first home run of the season a big one with a grand slam.
However, Trevecca answered Union's 6-run inning with six runs of their own. Three of those runs were unearned for the Trojans. Union got a double from
Kody Pinson to give Union a small 12-11 lead in the top of the sixth. But again, the Trojans answered with three runs to take the 14-12 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Union went quietly in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Four pitchers were used for Union. Starter
Derek Roof went 2.2 innings with five runs, eight hits and one strikeout.
Justin Bryan tossed the next two innings, allowing five runs, three earned, with a strikeout.
Trae Bain (0-5) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned in one inning of work.
Benjie Fesmire tossed the final third of an inning.
Union was led by
John Reed with three hits.
Hunter Smith, Pinson, and Speed each added two hits. Waring led with four RBI, while Russell and McAdams each added two RBI.
Union faces Victory University at 10 a.m. Friday morning in an elimination game. Should Union advance, their next game would be Friday at 7 p.m.
