Union baseball holds off No. 18 William Carey 6-4

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team earned a 6-4 win over NAIA No. 18 William Carey (Miss.) University Wednesday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Union improved to 9-28 on the season, while William Carey dropped to 31-16.
 
Union did all of their damage in the second inning with six runs on seven hits. Union sent 11 men to the plate. The Bulldogs put together nine consecutive productive at bats, including seven hits (six straight), an intentional walk, and a sacrifice fly.
 
Will Embry started for Union and tossed 4.2 innings of shutout baseball. Embry faced the minimum through the first three innings, allowing one hit. However, he pitched out of trouble in the fourth, leaving the bases loaded. He loaded the bases again in the fifth and was lifted with two outs. Cody Cunningham recorded the final out in the fifth to keep the game at 6-0.
 
William Carey got their first run in the sixth inning on a solo home run from Fabre. Cunningham and Union kept the Crusaders at bay until the ninth inning. Union led 6-1 going into the ninth inning when the Crusaders posted three straight hits, including a two-RBI triple from Castro, to start the inning. Justin Bryan relieved Cunningham and after giving up an RBI single to Posey, induced a double play from the pinch-hitter, Lablanc. After giving up a double, Bryan was lifted in favor of Trae Bain. Bain got the final out with a strikeout to earn his second save of the season. Cunningham (2-3) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and four runs.
 
Union pounded out 12 hits in the game, including at least one hit from all nine offensive starters. Cole McAdams, Pierson Waring, and Hunter Smith with two hits each. The six RBI in the game came from six different players.
 
Up next for Union will be a road conference series this weekend at Valdosta State (Ga.).
