MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Union University baseball team earned a double-header sweep at No. 14 Southern Arkansas University Tuesday afternoon. Union won the first game 4-3 and took the second game 7-2. Union improved to 3-5 on the season, while SAU dropped to 12-5.
Southern Arkansas is ranked No. 14 in two NCAA DII baseball polls and No. 22 in a third poll. The game one win for Union over SAU snapped the Muleriders' 7-game winning streak.
In game one, Union scored first as
Cole McAdams' RBI single scored
Jim Martin, who doubled with two outs. However, Union needed to rally in the final inning as Southern Arkansas scored a run in the fifth to tie the game, and two more in the sixth to take the 3-1 lead.
Pierson Waring and
Benjie Fesmire reached with back-to-back one out singles. After a fielder's choice and throwing error scored Waring, Union's
Colton Speed laced a 2-RBI single to right field to put the Bulldogs up 4-3.
Justin Bryan (1-0) tossed the final 1.2 innings of the game for Union in relief, allowing just one hit and not runs to earn the win.
Colin Hatch starting the game, allowing four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts in five innings.
Trae Bain tossed .1 innings, allowing two unearned runs and no hits with a walk. Menou (2-1) took the complete game loss, allowing seven hits four runs, one earned with two strikeouts. Union was led offensively by Speed with two hits and two RBI.
The Bulldogs were in control of game two from the start, leading 2-0 after the first inning. SAU cut the deficit to 2-1 after the third, but Union scored in each of the final three innings to lead 7-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. Union got two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, before four straight SAU hitters reached base, scoring one run. Union's Bain came in and got the final out, leaving the bases loaded.
John Reed (1-0) earned the win, tossing five innings allowing four hits, one earned run with two strikeouts. Fesmire tossed 1.2 innings of relief, allowing five hits and one earned run. Speed once again led Union offensively with three more hits in the second game, added two runs and one RBI.
Jim Martin and
Matthew Fuller added two RBI each in the win.
Up next for Union will be their first Gulf South Conference series this weekend at home versus West Alabama.
