JACKSON, Tenn. – Union University acknowledged their four senior women's soccer members;
Rachael Boswell,
Emily Crane,
Dionna Linn, and
Megan Roney prior to Saturday evening's Gulf South Conference match at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs lost 1-0 in double overtime with less than two minutes remaining to the University of Alabama Huntsville.
Each team had a strong reason for wanting to earn the victory. A win by Union University meant moving above .500 for the season and in Gulf South Conference matches. The Chargers aim was win to and secure a berth into the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Union is now 6-6-3 overall, 4-4-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville is 4-9-5 and 2-6-2 in GSC play.
Melody Dodd clinched the trip to the Gulf South Conference tournament for Alabama Huntsville. Dodd's third goal of the year was delivered at 108:04 into the lower right corner of the goal off a Danielle Schager pass from inside the goal box.
The finale to the 2013 regular season for Union was their fifth overtime match. Each of those matches went into double overtime with Union posting a 1-1-3 mark in extended play.
The 22 shots taken by Union was their second highest total this season. Union had 23 shot attempts Sept. 25 at home against North Alabama.
Union is in the provisional (third) year of moving to active status as a NCAA Division II and Gulf South Conference member. Union awaits hearing of possible postseason action in the NCCAA tournament allowing a chance to possibly end the season with a winning record. Only twice (2005, 2012) in the nine years of the Union University women's soccer program has the season concluded with an overall losing record.
