Union women's soccer tops Asbury 1-0

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team had multiple shots against Asbury (Ky.) University, but only one touched the back of the net for a 1-0 final. In the Tuesday afternoon non-conference contest at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex, Union took 17 total shots with six on goal. The victory moves Union to 3-1-3 overall, Asbury is now 4-7.

Kelsey Wilkes popped in the lone goal of the match at 39:05 from a few yards outside of the penalty box. The unassisted goal was the second of the season for the freshman from Franklin, Tenn. Union posted nine shots in the first half. Asbury took one shot in the contest with it being the first of the game barely a minute in off the foot of Jenna Bird. Bird's shot was the only ball played by Union goalkeeper Emily Waggoner in the game.

Union had eight shots in the second half though none factored into the final tally. Lizzie Hoffa notched five saves for Asbury, two in the final period.

Union had four corner kicks; Asbury did not attempt a corner. Each group committed five fouls.

The Bulldogs return to Gulf South Conference play for their next match. Union travels to the University of Alabama Huntsville to take on the Chargers at 7:00 p.m., Oct. 7.
