JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team took the first game of the series from Mississippi College Friday evening at Fesmire Field. Union improved to 11-21 overall on the season and 6-13 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College fell to 11-24 overall on this year's campaign and 6-13 in league play.
Mississippi College opened the top half of the game with a solo home run to left field taking an early lead. Union answered in the bottom half when
Alec Hardy scored on a single from
Grayson Swanson. The Choctaws picked up four more runs in the third and fourth innings increasing their lead to four. Union rallied in the middle innings and scored three runs in the fifth inning and eventually tied the game in the sixth. With a back half pitchers duel, the Bulldogs won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the nineth when
Blake Barrett singled to right and scored
Mitch Sisk.
Barrett led Union going 3-5 including the game winning hit.
Grant Ross and Barrett led the team with two RBI.
Sam Poindexter started on the mound for Union throwing eight innings allowing only three earned runs on five hits earning five strikeouts.
Ryan Evans (3-3) earned the win tonight throwing one inning giving up no hits and striking out one.
Up next for Union is a doubleheader to finish up the series. The first game is set to take place Saturday, April 8 at 12:00 p.m.
