JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team picked up a series win splitting with Mississippi College Saturday afternoon. Union lost the first game 8-17 and won the second game 7-6. Union improved to 12-22 overall on the season and 7-14 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College moved to 12-25 overall and 7-14 in league play.
The first game was a slug fest with the total number of hits totaling 22. The Choctaws picked up two runs in the top half of the inning and jumped out to an early lead. Union retook the lead after the second inning scoring one in the first and four in the second. Mississippi College took the lead back in the sixth and never looked back. The Choctaws had six extra base hits including two home run, one being a grand slam. Union only had one extra base hit.
Four Bulldogs led the team with two-hit performances.
Carson Chavies led the team with five RBI.
Eli Snelson started on the mound for the Bulldogs throwing five and two thirds' innings giving up seven runs on seven hits recording a strikeout. Three other Bulldogs threw in relief.
In the second game, both teams traded runs ultimately leading to a tie at five after two innings. Mississippi College took the lead in the third inning, but the Bulldogs rallied late in the sixth to tie the game at six all. Just like the win last night Union won in the bottom of the seventh in walk off fashion as
Mitch Sisk scored on a single from Snelson.
Britt Netterville led Union going 3-4 with a double.
Alec Hardy and
Blake Barrett led the team with two RBI.
Grant Ross started on the mound for Union throwing two and two thirds' innings allowing five runs on six hits earning three strikeouts.
Ryan Evans (4-3) picked up the win throwing two and a third innings allowing one hit and earning one strikeout. Two other Bulldogs contributed in this game.
-Up next for Union is a conference series on the road. The Bulldogs will travel down to Cleveland, Tenn. to take on the Flames of Lee University. The first game of the series is set to take place Friday, April 14 at 5:00 p.m.
