CLEVELAND, MISS. – The Union University baseball team split with Delta State Saturday afternoon. They lost the first game 17-11 and won the second game shutting out the Statesmen 6-0. Union moved to 9-17 overall on the season and 5-10 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State moved to 12-13 overall and 7-5 in league play.
In the first game, the Statesmen jumped out to an early lead as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the second and third inning they scored seven runs on four hits increasing their lead to 10. Union rallied in the fourth inning as they scored 10 runs that inning.
Ben Smith and
Mitch Sisk both homered in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs took the lead in the seventh inning as
Britt Netterville scored on a double by
Alec Hardy. The Statesmen answered right back in the bottom half of the seventh and scored three. They tacked on four more in the eighth to go on and win 17-11.
Sisk led Union going 3-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Lane Evans started on the mound for Union throwing two innings giving up six runs on six hits. Three other Bulldogs threw in relief.
In the second game, Union struck first as
Carson Chavies scored on a single from
Grayson Swanson. Union scored the bulk of their runs in the fourth inning as they scored four. They picked up one more run in the sixth winning with a final score of 0-6.
Netterville, Hardy, and Chavies led Union with the three of them going 2-4. Sisk and Hardy both had extra base hits with a double. Sisk and
Colby Davis led the team with two RBI.
Ryan Evans started on the mound throwing five innings allowing only five hits.
Ryan Middleton and
Jack Rasmussen also contributed in the shutout.
Up next for Union is a non-conference game on the road. The Bulldogs travel to Nashville to take on the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene. This game is set to take place Tuesday, March 21 at 6 p.m.
