JACKSON, TENN. – The Union University women's soccer team defeated Shorter University 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union improved to 2-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter falls to 0-6-1 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
Madison Woolridge scored the first goal of the contest in the 34th minute putting the Lady Bulldogs up 1-0.
Rivers Abshere was credited with the assist. Union held their shape well on defense resulting in a 1-0 lead going into the half. In the second half,
Sylvana Kempka added insurance as she found the net in the 71st minute of the game.
Anna Lamaj was credited with the assist. This being enough for a 2-0 victory over the Hawks.
Union outshot Shorter 29-7 and 15-3 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were in favor of Union 8-4, and Shorter led in fouls 13-12.
Claire Maxon led the team with five shots, Hanna Patterson,
Sophie Walsh,
Ines Gama, and
Holly Trisdale all recorded three shots. Eight other Lady Bulldogs contributed to the shot total. Kristen LaVallee got the start in goal and played all 90 minutes recording three saves.
Up next for Union is a conference matchup on the road as they head down to Montgomery, Ala. to take on the Warhawks of AUM. This match is set to take place Friday, September 16 at 5:00 p.m.
