Union softball splits with Delta State in Saturday doubleheader

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball team earned a doubleheader split Saturday at Fesmire Field. Union won the first game 5-2, then fell 7-3 in the second game. Union moved to 12-19 on the season and 6-11 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State improved to 18-14 on the season and 8-7 in league play. 
The first game was scoreless until Union's Baylee Stewart's RBI single in the third. Union added two more in the fourth when Fallon Groves crushed a 2-run home run to left center. Delta State got their two runs in the fifth, both unearned. Union added insurance runs in each to the fifth and sixth innings on RBI singles from Grace White and Bryleigh Carneal. Laken DiStefano (3-6) tossed the complete game, getting a season high 11 strikeouts in the win, allowing just two hits and no earned runs. Alyssa Ward, White, and Carneal led with two hits each whole Groves led with two RBI. 
In game two, the difference was the five-run third inning from Delta State, scoring all five runs before an out was recorded. Union got runs in the third and sixth innings but it was not enough to complete the rally. Macey Neal led Union with a 3-for-3 game with and RBI and run scored. Ward, White, and Idalia Alarcon each added two hits. Stewart, Neal, and White had one RBI each. Kira Finkley (1-4) took the loss, allowing five run, four earned in two innings. Olivia Baker tossed the final five innings in relief, allowing two runs. 
The teams will decide the series in game three, April 3 at 1 p.m. at Fesmire field.
