JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team completed the sweep over West Alabama Saturday afternoon. They won the first game 15-12, and the second game 8-7. Union improved to 17-20 overall and 10-13 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama fell to 12-29 overall and 9-15 in league play.
The first game was very much back in fourth with every run in the game being scored in the first six innings. West Alabama struck early with a three run homerun. In the second inning the Bulldogs chipped away at the lead scoring two making it a one run ballgame. Both teams traded runs in the third inning with West Alabama scoring two, and Union answering in the bottom half of the inning. The Bulldogs Pulled ahead in the fifth thanks to back to back homeruns, a two run blast from
Josh Bozoian and a solo shot from
Blake Barrett. West Alabama rallied in the sixth inning scoring four, but that wasn't enough. The Bulldogs scored six runs in the bottom half of the sixth to pull back ahead 15-12. Both teams would remain scoreless in the late innings resulting in a final score of 15-12.
Union was led offensively by both
Britt Netterville and Bozoian. Netterville went 3-4 with a double and two RBI. Bozoian went 3-4 with a homerun and four RBI.
Walker Adkisson started on the mound for Union throwing three innings earning one strikeout. He allowed five runs on seven hits and one freebie. Sam Pointdexter and
Ryan Evans both threw in relief. Combined they threw six innings earning two strikeouts. They allowed seven runs on six hits and four freebies.
In the second game, it didn't look to promising for Union as they were down 7-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs rally started in the bottom of the fifth inning when Bozoian hit a two run blast over the left field wall to put his team within three. They stung a few more hits together to plate two more runs in the fifth making it a one run ball game after the fifth. Union scored two more in the sixth to pull ahead 8-7.
Ryan Middleton threw a scoreless sixth and seventh frame to shut the door.
Union was led by Netterville as he went 2-3.
Sam McMillin started on the mound for Union throwing four innings earning two strikeouts. He allowed six runs on seven hits and three freebies. Aj Zeak and Middleton both threw in relief throwing three innings earning three strikeouts. They allowed one run on three hits and one walk.
Up next for Union is a nonconference match up on the road against Harding University. This game is set to take place Tuesday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m.
