Union Baseball takes first game of the series against UWA

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team defeated West Alabama in the first game of the series Friday afternoon at Fesmire field. The final score of the game was Union 4, West Alabama 2. The Bulldogs improved to 15-20 overall on the season, and 8-13 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama fell to 12-27 overall and 9-13 in league play.
 
Despite being down early Britt Netterville tied the game at one a piece in the bottom of the first when he hit a solo shot to left field. Josh Bozoian added to the lead with a homerun of his own that scored two in the bottom of the third inning. West Alabama rallied in the sixth inning but only managed to score one run, they still trailed 3-2 after the sixth. Ben Smith added an insurance run in the eighth inning after hitting a sacrifice fly that scored Grayson Swanson.
 
Union was led by Netterville as he went 3-4 with a homerun. Luke Williamson gave the Bulldogs a tremendous start throwing seven innings earning six strikeouts. He allowed two runs on six hits and five freebies. Williamson earned his fourth win of the season.
 
Dylan Thomas and Jack Rasmussen both threw an inning in relief. Neither Thomas or Rasmussen allowed a run, and only gave up one hit. Rasmussen earned the save after pitching a successful ninth inning earning two strikeouts.
 
Up next for Union is a doubleheader to close out the series against West Alabama. The first game is set to take place at 1:00 p.m. Following the first game will be a short intermission as we recognize the teams six seniors.
