MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team took two games in the first day of the three game Gulf South Conference series against Christian Brothers. The Bulldogs won the first game 9-7, and the second game 6-3. Union improved to 10-14 overall on the season and 5-8 in the GSC. Christian Brothers fell to 8-18 overall and 4-10 in league play.
In the first game, Union's bats were hot early, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning. CBU picked up a run in the bottom of the second as well as one in the fourth as they started to chip away at the lead.
Josh Bozoian put the Bulldogs up by one more as he homered to left. CBU plated three runs in the fifth bringing them within one run with a score of 6-5 heading into the sixth inning. Union added some insurance runs in the sixth inning when they scored three more. CBU came up short in the ninth scoring two runs making the final score 9-7
Multiple Bulldogs had multi-hit performances in this game.
Patrick Music went 2-4 with a double.
Grayson Swanson,
Dorian Berry,
Carson Chavies, and
Caden Cutrell all went 2-4.
Luke Williamson started on the mound throwing four innings. He earned five strikeouts, allowing five runs on eight hits and six walks.
Jack Rasmussen was credited with the win throwing five innings earning one strikeout. He allowed two runs on two hits and one walk.
In the second game, CBU scored first, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Union's bats woke up in the fifth inning when they put up a crooked number, scoring five runs with the help of a grand slam from
Britt Netterville and a double by Berry. Both teams traded a run in the seventh, making the final score 6-3. Union was led by Bozoian as he went 2-4 with a double. Sam Pointdexter started on the mound for Union throwing six and two-third innings. He earned four strikeouts, allowing three runs on five hits and five walks.
Ryan Middleton came in to shut the door. He faced one batter forcing a ground out.
Up next for Union is the last game of the three-game series against Christian Brothers. This game is set to take place Sunday, March 27 at 12:00 p.m.
