JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team dropped the last game of the series to No. 21 Lee University Sunday, Feb 20 at Fesmire Field. The final score after nine innings was 17-12. Union dropped to 5-5 overall on the season, and 1-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee improved to 7-4 on the season, and 2-1 in league play.
Lee struck first and kept the bats alive scoring in 6 of the nine innings that were played. Lee scored two runs in the first inning jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. In the second Inning, Lee piled on four more after Joshua Perez hit a two run shot, and Dylan Standifer singled bringing in two more runs increasing the Flames lead to 6. In the fourth Lee scored two more making the score 8-0 after the top of the fourth. Union's bats woke in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored two runs. One run off of a double from
Grayson Swanson and the other off of a single from
Jake Baker. During the fifth inning, Lee answered right back with four more runs making the score after five innings 12-2. Union picked up two runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from
Josh Bozoian, and a solo home run from Swanson.
The seventh inning was where Union chipped away at the lead. After Lee plated four more runs in the top of the seventh, Union scored seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. Bozoian hit a three run home run and Swanson hit an inside the park home run making up four of the seven runs they scored that inning. In the eighth inning both Union and Lee scored a run. Neither team plated a run in the ninth making the final score 17-12.
Patrick Music and Swanson led Union with three hits, two of Swanson's hits were home runs. Bozoian led Union with four RBI's.
Luke Williamson started on the mound for Union. He threw 2.0 innings, allowing five hits, six runs, and three walks.
Ethan Orwig came in to pitch in relief, he threw 1.1 innings earning 2 strikeouts, allowing four hits, two runs, and one walk. Sam Pointdexter was the next pitcher for Union. He threw 1.2 innings earning one strikeout, allowing five hits, and four runs. Ryan evens threw 1.2 innings earning two strikeouts, allowing 3 hits, four runs, and three walks. Jake Jewel threw 0.1 innings earning one strikeout not allowing a hit or a run.
Ryan Middleton threw 2.0 innings earning four strikeouts, allowing two hits and one run.
Up next for Union is a non-conference matchup on the road. The Bulldogs will head to Monticello, Ark. to take on the Weevils of the University of Arkansas at Monticello. This game will take place Tuesday, Feb 22 at 2:00 p.m.
