JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball team posted a sweep over Christian Brothers University Saturday in a double-header at Fesmire Field. Union improved to 6-27 overall and 5-20 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers University dropped to 7-25 on the season and 7-19 in league play.
Union led 3-0 in the first game, two of the runs coming by way of solo home runs. The first was a solo shot in the second from
Gabby Morris. The home run for Morris gave her 35 for her career, setting the Union career record. Sara Smith added a home run in the fourth. CBU got a two out-two-strike 3-run home run in the fifth to tie the game and later took the 4-3 lead in the sixth. Union's
Mackenzi David hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings. Then, David hit her second home run in as many innings, this one a two-run shot to give Union the game one win. The two home runs for David tied the school record for home runs in a game with two. Morris earned the win, tossing all six innings, allowing four runs, three earned on three hits with seven strikeouts and seven walks. Smith, Morris, David, and
Ashten Petty all had two hits. David led with four RBI.
Game two was back and forth as Union scored in every innings but the second. David hit her third home run of the day and fifth of the year to give Union a 5-3 lead in the fourth. CBU took control with a 5-run fifth inning to lead 8-5. David answered the call again, this time with a 2-run single in the fifth to pull Union to within one, 8-7. In the bottom of the sixth, Union regained the lead 9-8 with a 2-RBI single from
Samantha McDaniel.
Taylor Manley started the game but was relieved by Morris (5-15) in the fifth. Morris tossed the final 2.1 innings allowing three hits with no runs and one strikeout to earn her second win of the day.
Alyssa Ward led with four hits in the game. McDaniel led with four RBI in the game, while David had three RBI.
The final game of the series will be April 18 at 1 p.m. with senior recognitions to follow.
