VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Union University softball team won one game in a three-game series at No. 5 Valdosta State University over the weekend. Union lost the first game 8-0, won the second game 5-3, and lost the third game 13-2. Union moved to 3-17 and the season and 2-10 in conference play. VSU moved to 12-3 overall and 10-2 in the GSC.
Union fell in the first game 8-0 in five innings. Sarah Smith led the Lady Bulldogs with two hits including a double. Taylor Manley had one hit in the game.
The Lady Bulldogs' hitting picked up in the second game as seven players combined for nine hits. VSU scored two runs in the first inning but a solo home run from Gabby Morris in the top of the third kept Union withing one run. VSU picked up another run in the bottom of the third to set the score at 3-1. Union scored a second run in the fifth inning when Manley scored from third base on an error. A single from Grace White drove in Alyssa Ward from second base to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth. In the eighth inning, Harley Bartholomew scored from second when Smith hit her second double of the day. Samantha McDaniel hit a single to right field that drove in smith to give Union a two-run lead. VSU had one hit in the bottom of the eighth but was unable to score, giving the Lady Bulldogs the 5-3 win.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Morris and Smith with two hits each. Ward, Bartholomew, White, McDaniel, and Ashten Petty all logged one hit in the game. Morris (3-8) threw all eight innings for Union, giving up just four hits and three earned runs while striking out eight.
In game three, Union fell 13-2 in five innings. Union was led by Ward with two hits, while Smith logged her third double in as many games, and McDaniel added a single. Smith's double in the fourth inning drove in Bartholomew, and Smith scored on a throwing error.
Up next for Union is a nonconference doubleheader at home against North Georgia, Wednesday, March 17, beginning at 3 p.m. at Fesmire Field.
